Where: The city of Agadir, Morocco and countryside north of Agadir (1 week in each location).
Qualifications: No medical experience is necessary (although it is helpful and will allow you more opportunities to work with Moroccan healthcare professionals.) We train you to take blood pressure, blood sugar measurements, and give eye tests.
The winter 2014 trip is organized into 2 components: rural volunteering and urban volunteering. The first week of the program is in the Moroccan country-side. Volunteers “live” in the countryside during this week, staying in a traditional desert-rock home, enjoying authentic village-prepared food. Participants get to work, hands-on, with Moroccan doctors and nurses during our rural health clinics. They also participate in several school and village projects ( farming, teaching English/Math). Volunteer Morocco has a well-established relationship with the hospital and the folks in the country-side so students participating in the trip get to experience Morocco in a unique context, from a position of trust. The second part of the trip is in the city of Agadir where volunteers work in a 500-bed hospital or clinic and learn about the health care delivery system in a developing nation as well as working with doctors and nurses. There is also volunteer work in a hospital run orphanage.
Those participating in the trip are able to work on projects depending on their experience. In the past, our nurses and more experienced students/volunteers gave shots, sutured, delivered babies, prepared prescriptions, checked blood pressure, blood sugar, started IVs, etc. They were able to work directly with docs, nurses and pharmacists.
The strength of this program is that it is highly supported (translators, staff, full meal plan, hotels/hostels, excellent programming) and students leave Morocco feeling they have truly made a difference in the lives of Moroccans. We also plan a good deal of sight-seeing opportunities - you can't visit Morocco without seeing some of the fascinating cultural sights!

2010 Summer Volunteer Morocco Program Concludes
"I was able to experience so much hands on medical action that I would have had to wait at least 2 years to do at my medical school hospital, and even more important, I really felt like I was interacting with and helping the people I met in the clinics and hospital. I also felt fortunate to have the opportunity to see so much of the country from a real perspective that I would have never seen as a tourist." - Catherine H., volunteer summer 2010.
