June 8-22, 2008 Volunteer Trip

During the summer of 2008, Volunteer Morocco organized a 2-week program for American students starting in Casablanca and ending in the village of Ighril, about 80 km north of Agadir.

The volunteer group was made up of 8 pharmacy students, 4 pre-med students and 1 nurse – all future health care workers.  They got a first hand look at urban medicine and rural medicine as it is practiced in a developing country.  They also spent time volunteering in an orphanage, a rural fishing village, and a rural agrarian village.

Volunteer Morocco Summer 2008 Projects

Project I:  Hassan II Hospital, located in Agadir, Morocco.  Hassan II is a flagship teaching hospital in the Moroccan health care system.  Students began their time at Hassan II in an information session learning about health care training and health care delivery in Morocco.  The visit to Hassan II included meetings with the director of the school and the director of the hospital, along with volunteer work in the maternity ward.  The students also volunteered in the Hassan II orphanage that provides a home for more than 80 Moroccan children.

Project II: Rural Health Clinic in the region of Riad Imsouane.  Many of the people living in the rural villages in the region of Riad Imsouane have never had the opportunity to see a doctor or nurse.  Volunteer Morocco and L’association Riad Imsouane recruited 6 medical staff from the nearby city of Agadir to participate in a 1-day health clinic that served over 300 villagers.  Volunteer Morocco and the International Medical Equipment Collaborative (IMEC) provided examination equipment and supplies, and Moroccan pharmaceutical representatives provided the medicine prescribed by the doctors.

The pre-med and nursing students assisted with the examinations, checking blood pressure and blood sugar while the pharmacy students worked in the pharmacy filling prescriptions and organizing the donated medicine.

Project III:  Ighril Village, 80 km north of Agadir.  In this small village atop a mountain, Volunteer Morocco volunteers prepared a school yard for planting olive trees and painted the future community center.  They participated in the daily life of the villagers and were treated to traditional food and song during their days in Ighril.
