DRIP IRRIGATION PROJECT
During August 2008, Volunteer Morocco began a drip irrigation system project in Riade Imsouane, a rural Moroccan village 80 km north of Agadir.
The drip irrigation system was demonstrated by MIT graduate student Zahir Dossa, a PhD candidate in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning and Chris Hudgens, a recent graduate from Brown University.
Southern Morocco, like many other parts of Africa, is challenged by desertification and a semi-arid climate that limits crop production.
Volunteer Morocco has sponsored a community trial plot to determine the best small plot farming method for the region.
1. Introduce existing technologies that increase processing efficiency of Argan Oil
2. Establish quality standards and standard packaging for Argan oil
3. Establish fair wage standards with a commitment to improving the financial and social status of Moroccan women in Riad Imsouane
4. Develop a distribution network to bring locally produced Argan oil to international markets and stable domestic markets.
5. Return profits to programs in the village that support the Volunteer Morocco mission of developing and encouraging economic self-sustainability in the rural village region of Riad Imsouane, with a particular emphasis on the empowerment of women.
